According to a recent survey by GSM London, 71% of the UK see their work as a job, not a career. The poll also revealed the happiness of those with jobs and those with careers, as well as the most common reasons why people find it hard to transition into another line of work.
One of the most significant differences between those with careers and those with jobs is the motivation for their work. A massive 54% of people with a job see it as means to an end, versus just 10% of those with a career. From these figures, it is obvious that careers can offer more than just a pay slip.
There are a number of reasons that contribute to employees staying in jobs they are unhappy with. Almost half (41%) of dissatisfied workers claim that after 34, you are too old to change careers.. Other reasons cited against changing careers were family commitments (22%), the pressure of uncertainty (22%) and lack of confidence (21%).
The pressure of uncertainty is prevalent among the minds of working adults in the UK today due to the ambiguity of Brexit and a changing employment landscape, amongst other factors. The recent changes in the state pension age also mean that we will probably be working for much longer, so we should try to at least enjoy it!
Over a quarter of East Anglian residents are unhappy in their current workplace. Are you one of them? If so, our article ‘Seven signs that you need a new job’ may help you determine whether a job or career change is in order.
